Wegmans Pasta Sauce Recalled Due to Health Concerns, FDA Warns

Tomato sauce is a staple in any pantry. It's easy to grab if you're making a simple, last-minute pasta dinner, or if you're getting more creative with homemade pizza. However, if you're a Wegmans shopper and recently stocked up on sauce, you'll want to double-check the jar you purchased, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just issued a recall notice. Read on to find out which sauce was pulled from shelves, and what you should do if you have it at home.

Recalled sauce was sold in eight states and Washington, D.C.
According to a May 17 notice issued by the FDA, LiDestri Foods is recalling 24-ounce jars of Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce. The spicy red sauce is packaged in a mason jar, and the affected varieties have an expiration date of March 31, 2025. They also have a jar code of F0589 and a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 077890222409. The latter can be found beneath the barcode on the back of the jar.
The sauce was sold in eight states, namely Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C.
The pasta sauce may contain an undeclared allergen.
The sauce was pulled after it was discovered that it may contain undeclared fish in the form of anchovies, per the FDA. The recall was first prompted by a customer complaint, who noted that the Diavolo Past Sauce contained anchovies, but was distributed in packaging that didn't list anchovies as an ingredient.
An investigation revealed that the error "was caused by a temporary breakdown in LiDestri Foods' packaging processes," the FDA said. Products were sold at Wegmans between April 3, 2023, and May 16, 2023.

If you bought the sauce, return it for a refund.
Consumers who are allergic to anchovies or have a severe sensitivity to the fish "run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the products," according to the FDA.
If you have the Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce with the March 25, 2025, expiration date and code F0589, the FDA asks that you return it to the store you bought it from for a refund.
If you have questions about the recall itself, call Wegmans Food Markets at 1-855-934-3663, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). You can also call on Saturday and Sunday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
Another pasta sauce was just recalled.
It's been a tough month for pasta sauces: According to a May 9 FDA notice, Bakkavor USA voluntarily recalled Trader Joe's Genova Pesto sold in 14 states.
The products were "mistakenly packaged into tubs marked Hummus Dip," the FDA said. Similar to the Wegmans pasta sauce, the recall was initiated due to allergen concerns. According to the agency, the Genova Pesto contained both milk and walnuts, but as the sauce was packaged in the hummus tubs, the products lacked an "allergen declaration" for either ingredient.
Consumers with milk or walnut allergies were instructed not to eat the pesto and to either throw it out or return it to Trader Joe's for a full refund.
